First, clarification on last week case # 3
I said last week that the result is not 9. When a stroke must be cancelled, the player must correct. When the ball hits the players foot, the stroke does not count and by playing the ball in the new position it was a serious breach of playing from the wrong place. If the player makes a stroke on the next hole, the player is disqualified.
Answers to Case # 4
The answer to case 4 is 4 strokes plus 2 penalty strokes for a total of 6.
Diane comes to the next tee. She doesn’t like the alignment of the tee markers and moves them.
-Moving the tee markers is not permitted. The general penalty applies (2 strokes or loss of hole).
Before teeing off, she has second thoughts and replaces the tee markers in their original positions.
-There are some penalties that can be corrected when a player realizes the error. In this case, the penalty for moving the tee markers can be waived by replacing the markers to their original positions prior to the player teeing off.

Her ball ends up close to a penalty area marked by red stakes. At her ball, she removes a red stake which would have interfered with her swing and hits her shot close to a out of bounds.
-There is no penalty for moving a red or yellow stake.
Before hitting her next shot, she removes the white out-of-bounds stake which would have interfered with her swing and ends up on the green.
-Moving an out-of-bounds stake is not permitted. The general penalty applies (2 strokes or loss of hole) …. unless she had put back the stake in place prior to her stroke
She has a putt of 5 feet. The flagstick is not properly set in the hole and is crooked. She seats it straight and putts, holing out.
-Adjusting the flagstick so that it is straight is permitted. However, a player may not reposition the flagstick so that it is other than straight.
QUESTION:
A player’s ball is leaning against the flagstick which is seated in the hole. Instead of gently moving the flagstick so that the ball falls completely in, the player picks up his/her ball without it falling to the bottom of the hole. The player then proceeds to the next hole and tees off. What is the ruling?

Julie Cloutier
