In the next weeks, I will talk about rule 17 – Penalty areas. I received many requests for questions / answers. Most of you understand better in that format.
On a golf course, we find two different types of penalty areas. They are identified by red or yellow stakes or lines.
RED STAKES / lines
Usually, a ditch or river alongside a fairway is marked RED. When it is known or virtually certain a ball is in a red penalty area, the player has 4 options:
1. Play the ball where it lies
2. Drop a ball not more than 2 club-lengths from the edge of the penalty area (lateral relief)
3. Drop a ball with a back on the line relief, keeping the point where the ball entered in the PA in line with the pin
4. Return to the previous point under the Stroke and Distance option
YELLOW STAKES / lines
Options 1, 3 and 4 are available for a ball in a yellow penalty area. We may not drop a ball within 2 club-length from the point of entry. The dropped ball will most probably keep the penalty in front of the player between him and the hole.
HERE ARE A FEW QUESTIONS
7.1 A player drops a ball under the lateral relief (2 club length). When the ball is at rest and the player is ready to make his stroke, he has his feet in the water, in the penalty area. Must he drop again?
7.2 The player is searching for his ball in the woods. He does not find it. In the forest he sees a river marked with RED STAKES. What are his options?
7.3 The player’s ball touches slightly the red line. Is the ball in the penalty area or in the general area?
7.4 The player finds his ball in a penalty area. He decides to play it. The ball goes farther into the lake after the stroke. What are his options
7.5 The player drops a ball in the proper relief area, but the ball rolls out of the area and goes back into the water. What would be the player’s next move?
